Millimeter Wave Frequency Synthesizer IPs
mmWave (mm-Wave) frequency synthesizers generate LO signals required for up-converting down-converting the signals. Phase-locked loops are used to lock the frequency of a voltage-controlled oscillator (VCO) or dielectric-resonator oscillator (DRO) to a crystal oscillator (XOSC) for very accurate frequency generation. Due to very high multiplication factor from XOSC frequency to the LO frequency, achieving good in-band phase noise (PN) is a challenge. Also, mmwave VCO PN suffers from low Q-factor of the passive components (especially varactors). Therefore, the VCO may be implemented at lower frequencies followed by a frequency multiplier to generate the required LO signal with better PN.
SaberTek has developed key mmWave SX IPs for various frequency band, K-band (24GHz), V-band (60GHz), E-band (71-76 and 81-86 GHz), and W-band (77GHz and 94GHz). These IP’s could be used to develop competitive mmw products for various applications such as WiGig, automotive radar, passive imaging, and E-band backhaul.
